THEATRE I IS AN INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEW OF THE ART OF THEATRE. SUBJECTS COVERED INCLUDE IMPROVISATION, VOICE, CHARACTERIZATION AND FUNDAMENTALS OF PLAY PRODUCTION. STUDY OF SPECIFIC TEXTS INCLUDES RAISIN IN THE SUN, HARVEY AND A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM. HOMEWORK AND PROJECTS INCLUDE SCENE WORK, MONOLOGUES, AND READING. THEATRE I HELPS STUDENTS IMPROVE SELF-CONFIDENCE AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS. IT'S A GREAT OVERVIEW OF THEATRE AND FULFILLS THE FINE ARTS CREDIT.

PREREQUISITE–THEATRE I, ORAL INTERPRETATION I

THEATRE II THROUGH THEATRE IV ARE TAUGHT TOGETHER. THE CURRICULUM IS ON A TWO YEAR CYCLE SO STUDENTS MY TAKE THE COURSE BOTH THEIR JUNIOR AND SENIOR YEARS AND BE INTRODUCED TO NEW MATERIAL. THE EMPHASIS IS ON ACTING TECHNIQUE AND HISTORICAL ACTING STYLES. STUDENTS WORK ON SCRIPT ANALYSIS, PERFORMANCE SKILLS AND THEATRE HISTORY. STUDENTS GET TO WORK WITH GUEST ARTISTS IN FIELDS SUCH AS ACTING, DANCE AND STAGE COMBAT. SOME OF THE TEXTS WHICH ARE STUDIED INCLUDE HAMLET, LONG DAYS JOURNEY INTO NIGHT, ALL MY SONS, NO EXIT AND THE TROJAN WOMEN. STUDENTS GET TO WORK WITH GUEST ARTIST AND EXPLORE THEATRE ARTS IN GREATER DEPTH. HOMEWORK AND PROJECTS INCLUDE REQUIRED READING OF ONE OUTSIDE PLAY AND PERFORMING ONE MONOLOGUE EACH SIX WEEKS. STUDENTS ALSO PREPARE SOLO AND GROUP PERFORMANCES AND ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND AND REVIEW OUTSIDE THEATRE PERFORMANCES. 

 


THEATRE SELECT

PREREQUISITE–AUDITION WITH THEATRE DIRECTOR

THIS IS A BY-AUDITION COURSE FOR NINTH AND TENTH GRADE STUDENTS THAT PROVIDES AN ADVANCED INTRODUCTION TO ACTING TECHNIQUE, SCRIPT ANALYSIS, AND WORLD THEATRE. STUDENTS WORK WITH GUEST ARTISTS, PRODUCE A ONE-ACT PRODUCTION FOR COMPETITION, AND HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM IN SENIOR-DIRECTED ONE ACT PLAYS. EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE UPPER-DIVISION HONORS, THEATRE MAJOR STUDIES, AND IB PROGRAMS. STUDENTS MUST AUDITION AGAIN FOR THE SECOND YEAR. DI PREPARES STUDENTS FOR IB THEATRE AND OTHER ADVANCED THEATRE PROGRAMS AT PESH. HOMEWORK INCLUDES SCENE WORK, MONOLOGUES, JOURNALING, AND READING.

 

 

 


IB THEATRE SL
COURSE NUMBER–453841
PREREQUISITE–INTERVIEW WITH THEATRE DIRECTOR

THIS STANDARD LEVEL (SL) IB COURSE FOR EITHER ELEVENTH OR TWELFTH-GRADE STUDENTS GIVES STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE THEATRE AS CREATORS, DESIGNERS, DIRECTORS, AND PERFORMERS. IT EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF WORKING BOTH INDIVIDUALLY AND COLLABORATIVELY AS PART OF AN ENSEMBLE. STUDENTS LEARN TO APPRECIATE THE PROCESSES OF RESEARCHING, CREATING, PREPARING, PRESENTING, AND CRITICALLY REFLECTING ON THEATRE. AS BOTH PARTICIPANTS AND AUDIENCE MEMBERS, STUDENTS GAIN A RICHER UNDERSTANDING OF THEMSELVES, THEIR COMMUNITY, AND THE WORLD BY ENGAGING WITH DIFFERENT FORMS OF THEATRE ACROSS TIME, PLACE, AND CULTURE. THERE IS NO SL EXAM; INSTEAD, STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THREE PROJECTS (THE DIRECTOR'S NOTEBOOK, RESEARCH PRESENTATION, AND COLLABORATIVE THEATRE PROJECT). IN ADDITION STUDENTS READ THEATRE SCRIPTS, EXPLORE THEATRE IN THE CONTEXT OF A VARIETY OF CULTURES, PERFORM SOLO AND IN GROUPS, AND ATTEND OUTSIDE PRODUCTIONS.STUDENTS ARE EXPOSED TO THE PROCESS OF MAKING THEATRE AND ITS MEANING IN A VARIETY OF CULTURAL CONTEXTS. THIS COURSE CONTINUES TO EMPHASIZE ACTING TECHNIQUE AND HISTORICAL ACTING STYLES. STUDENTS WORK ON SCRIPT ANALYSIS, PERFORMANCE SKILLS AND THEATRE HISTORY. EMPHASIS IS ON PRODUCTION AND PREPARING STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE THEATRE STUDIES. STUDENTS WORK WITH GUEST ARTISTS AND PRODUCE A MAJOR PRODUCTION AS WELL AS SENIOR-DIRECTED ONE ACT PLAYS. STUDENTS WORK WITH GUEST ARTISTS AND PRODUCE A MAJOR PRODUCTION AS WELL AS SPRING ONE ACT PLAYS. HONORS CREDIT IS AVAILABLE FOR ONE HOUR OF THE COURSE. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO WORK ON ALL DEPARTMENT PRODUCTIONS. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO READ PLAYS, PERFORM SOLO AND IN GROUPS, ATTEND OUTSIDE PRODUCTIONS AND WRITE A RESEARCH PAPER. EMPHASIS IS ON PREPARING FOR COLLEGE AUDITIONS AND FURTHER STUDIES OF ACTING FROM BOTH WESTERN AND NON-WESTERN TRADITIONS. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT COURSE FOR COLLEGE-BOUND THEATRE/LIBERAL ARTS STUDENTS. THEY ARE EXPOSED TO MANY THEATRICAL AND LITERARY TRADITIONS AND STYLES.

TECHNICAL THEATRE STUDENTS WORK IN THE AREAS OF SET CONSTRUCTION, LIGHTING, SOUND, COSTUMES, MAKE-UP AND THEATRICAL DESIGN. TECH CLASSES BUILD AND PROVIDE TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR THEATRE PRODUCTIONS AND OTHER PERFORMING GROUPS. STUDENTS MUST BE ABLE TO WORK RESPONSIBLY AND INDEPENDENTLY. AFTER SCHOOL HOURS ARE REQUIRED DURING PRODUCTIONS. MOST WORK IS DONE IN CLASS OR IN AFTER SCHOOL CREW CALLS. THERE ARE A FEW DESIGN PROJECTS. TECHNICAL THEATRE IS A GREAT COURSE FOR STUDENTS WHO LIKE TO WORK HANDS ON AND ARE HANDY WITH TOOLS. THIS COURSE SATISFIES THE FINE ARTS CREDIT REQUIREMENT.


 


ADVANCED TECHNICAL THEATRE I & II

THIS IS HONORS PRODUCTION COURSE REQUIRES THE COMPLETION OF THE APPLICATION PROCESS AND THE APPROVAL OF THE TECHNICAL DIRECTOR. ADVANCED TECH STUDENTS WORK IN THE AREAS OF SET CONSTRUCTION, LIGHTING, SOUND, COSTUMES, MAKE-UP AND THEATRICAL DESIGN. PARTICIPATION IN THE ANNUAL UIL STATE DESIGN CONTEST IS REQUIRED, AS ARE A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF AFTER SCHOOL HOURS DURING PRODUCTIONS. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO WORK ON ALL DEPARTMENT PRODUCTIONS, READ PLAYS, PERFORM SOLO AND IN GROUPS, ATTEND OUTSIDE PRODUCTIONS AND WRITE A RESEARCH PAPER. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT COURSE FOR COLLEGE-BOUND TECHNICAL THEATRE AND DESIGN STUDENTS AND FOR THOSE WHO PLAN A CAREER IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY.
